There are many times when I feel like the only mean on the whole planet. Don't knock your mean and ugly feeling till you've tried them. Remember, it takes a really big heart to love the good, the bad, and the ugly. When we grow to accept and cherish the darker parts of ourselves, life just rolls along more smoothly. Whether you have good reason or no good reason at all, feeling mean and ugly can be healthy, refreshing and, at times, even necessary.
There are, of course, two types of mean and ugliness. One gives you energy while the other leaves you feeling droopy. Telling the difference between the two will be very important. One kind you can use, the other you need to lose. There are times when life may require that we stand up and take care of ourselves. We may have to be mean and ugly to get what we need in order to live.
When you feel mean and ugly, you need extra special love, attention and care. This is when you need a special friend or beloved family member to reassure you of your basic goodness. Hearing the word “good” linked to your name, is the best medicine to cure the droopy kind of feeling. You may need more assurance of your goodness. Just at the time when you need love and acceptance the most, you may be the least able to ask for it. This is because when you feel mean and ugly, you may not feel worthy of being held.
